From the melting glaciers of Montana to the crowded beaches of the Canary Islands: Fodor’s 2026 No List report reveals eight beloved destinations that are not recommended for visiting. The reasons: overtourism, damage to ecosystems and local protests, which turn familiar places into destinations worth staying away from
In a world where more and more travelers are seeking personal and unique experiences, not every favorite destination is always the right place to visit. Every year, Fodor’s Travel publishes its No List, a list of destinations that are recommended to be given a break from tourists, not because they are forbidden to visit, but because visiting them at this time could harm the local quality of life and the natural environment.
The 2026 list includes eight notable destinations around the world that have issues such as overtourism, damage to ecosystems, massive developments or local protests that make visiting less than ideal in the coming year:

Antarctica – Beautiful and unique, but continues to be damaged by tourists
Antarctica has always attracted travelers seeking to see spectacular landscapes and unique animals in their natural habitat. Between 2023 and 2024, about 120,000 people visited the frozen continent, and the number is expected to double by 2033. The growing tourism is putting pressure on a highly sensitive ecosystem, especially when there are no official limits on the number of visitors.
Experts warn that while the visit can raise awareness about environmental conservation, the large tourist impact could harm wildlife, the natural landscape and even create other environmental risks. Some cruise lines promote “eco-tourism,” but most visitors do not actively participate in conservation efforts. So it’s fair to view Antarctica as a destination that needs to be reconsidered before adding it to your next travel list.

Locals are simply fed up with tourists filling their islands. Canary Islands, Spain
The Canary Islands were on the No List again in 2025, and are set to be on the dubious list again in 2026 due to problems with overtourism and local protests. Residents have taken to the streets to protest against heavy traffic, unaffordable housing prices and beach pollution. The addition of hundreds of thousands of tourists each year is creating unbearable traffic congestion and overwhelming local infrastructure.
Despite the protests, visitor numbers are actually rising: over the past decade, there has been a 5 percent increase in tourist arrivals in the first half of 2025. Travelers still enjoy the sun, wine, tapas and stunning beaches, but for locals the situation has become impossible. Experts suggest considering nearby alternatives, such as less crowded beaches on Spain’s Costa Calida.

The tourists who come to the park only continue to wear it down. Glacier National Park, Montana, United States
Glacier Park is struggling with a serious problem of overtourism alongside a climate crisis: the glaciers that gave the park its name are melting at twice the global average, and today only 27 of the 150 glaciers observed there at the beginning of the 20th century remain. In addition, heat, fires and other environmental phenomena are weakening the ecosystem and the habitats of local animals.
Visitors who come to see the glaciers in person could exacerbate the damage: traffic congestion, pollution and erosion of the landscape. To try to manage the impact, the park now requires visitors to book tickets in advance during peak season, but the challenge of managing large crowds without destroying what makes the place so special remains.

Locals are unhappy with the construction of the new port. Isola Sacra
A small, peaceful area near Rome is under threat from the construction of a major cruise port. Isola Sacra, a place where local Romans enjoy a quiet beach and a peaceful natural environment, is facing significant change: natural coastal areas will be removed or filled with concrete, and flora and fauna could be harmed.
The construction of the port has been sparking protests since 2010, and experts warn that the environmental impacts could be very severe. Travelers looking for a relaxing vacation near Rome can find alternatives such as the town of Terracina, which offers quiet beaches and natural landscapes.

Locals claim that tourists do not contribute to the local economy. Jungfrau, Switzerland
Locals claim that tourists do not contribute to the local economy. Jungfrau, Switzerland
The stunning Alpine region includes villages like Grindelwald, Wengen and Lauterbrunnen, which have become popular tourist destinations. More than a million visitors came to the region in 2024, a 5.1 percent increase in arrivals compared to the previous year. While tourists enjoy the spectacular scenery, locals suffer from infrastructure problems, high housing prices and an inability to make a living in a way that benefits them.
Most visitors only come for a day, and don’t contribute significantly to the local economy. Experts suggest considering alternatives like Slovenia, which offers spectacular mountain scenery but is less crowded.

Much less authentic than before. Mexico City, Mexico
The Mexican capital has been struggling with a surge in tourism in recent years, leading to problems of gentrification and the exodus of locals. Rising housing prices, street protests, and a lack of amenities for travelers, including restaurants that cater to tourists rather than local authenticity, have made the city less inviting. Graffiti threatening foreigners and restrictions on short-term stays reinforce the sense that the city needs some internal rehabilitation before it can be recommended again. For travelers looking for a cultural and welcoming experience, Panama City is an alternative.

The beaches are not clean and tourism is problematic. Mombasa, Kenya
Mombasa, Kenya’s second city, attracts many travelers thanks to its white beaches and unique local culture, but dealing with overtourism has made a visit there less than ideal. Polluted beaches, sex tourism, crime near cruise ports and disorganized infrastructure make the place difficult to visit. Despite ongoing efforts to improve the situation and develop organized tourism, it seems that the situation is likely to remain as it is for the foreseeable future, so it is recommended to be updated before planning a visit to Mombasa.

Millions of tourists flood the neighbourhood’s alleys. Montmartre, Paris
Montmartre, the charming Parisian neighbourhood with its cobblestone alleys, historic cafes, and Sacré-Coeur Basilica, has become an impossible place to live for its residents. More than 11 million tourists visit every year, while the population is only about 30,000. The result: traffic jams, constant noise, and a lack of quiet public spaces. Experts suggest visiting the Belleville neighbourhood as an alternative, which offers an artistic, authentic, and open experience.
Even if a destination isn’t on your must-visit list for 2026, that doesn’t mean your travel plans will be stress-free. One of the most overlooked parts of any trip is car rental insurance – especially in countries where rental companies charge high excess fees or use automated damage detection systems.
Whether you’re navigating narrow streets in a historic town or simply picking up a car for a day trip, unexpected charges for dents, scratches, or inflated damage claims can quickly turn a disappointing destination into a costly memory.
That’s where CarInsuRent can help. With affordable rental car excess insurance (available as single-trip or annual coverage), you can enjoy peace of mind knowing you’re protected against high damage fees – including third-party administrative costs – that are not always covered by the rental company’s own insurance. Not sure if annual coverage is right for you? Compare daily vs annual car hire excess insurance to find the best option for your travel need.
Why many travelers choose CarInsuRent:
✔️ Covers excess charges from rental car companies worldwide
✔️ Often much cheaper than buying insurance at the rental desk
