When it comes to renting a car, understanding the deposit requirements is crucial to managing your finances effectively. Avis Car Rental, like most rental companies, requires a deposit to secure your reservation, commonly referred to as the Avis credit card hold.

Avis Credit Card Hold

An Avis credit card hold is a security measure to guard against late returns, additional fuel charges, or other potential incidents1. Let’s delve into what this entails:

  • The hold equals the cost of the rental plus a security deposit.
  • If you pay with a credit or debit card, Avis will place a hold of $200 plus the estimated rental charges.
  • The funds held are not available to you during the rental period.

Avis Policy on Debit Cards

While credit cards are commonly accepted, Avis policy on debit cards is slightly different:

  • Avis does not accept debit cards in some city locations.
  • At certain airport locations, the debit card hold will be the estimated rental charges plus $350.
  • Avis will put a hold on your bank account tied to your debit card for the full cost of the rental plus the security deposit, typically $200.

Avis Deposit Amount

The Avis deposit amount varies depending on the method of payment and pick-up location:

  • When you rent a car with a debit card, the typical Avis deposit amount is $200.
  • For credit card rentals, the deposit consists of the full cost of the rental plus a security deposit.
  • In some specific airport locations, if you pay with a debit card, the hold will be the estimated rental charges plus $350.

Does Avis Require a Deposit?

Yes, Avis does require a deposit. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The deposit equals the cost of the rental plus a security deposit.
  • When you return the vehicle, Avis will refund your deposit in full if there were no additional charges.
  • The return of the deposit can take up to two weeks to be posted to your account by your bank.

Avis Security Deposit

An Avis security deposit is a sum of money held as insurance against possible additional charges1. Here are the specifics:

  • The security deposit is part of the hold placed on your credit or debit card.
  • The amount of the security deposit depends on several factors, including your method of payment and the pick-up location.
  • Upon returning the vehicle, Avis will return any unused portion of the hold.

Avis Security Deposit and Refund Process

If there were no extra fees for fuel replacement, late return, or other incidentals, Avis will fully refund your deposit when you return the car. Depending on how you paid, you may receive your security deposit sooner or later.

Using a credit card to pay for a rental

Your account is placed on hold by Avis for the full rental price plus the security deposit. When the car is returned, Avis releases the hold and just keeps the rental fee. In reality, the hold’s security deposit portion is instantly released.

Using a debit card to pay for a rental car

On the day of pick-up, Avis will place a hold on the full rental amount plus the security deposit, which is normally $200, on the bank account associated with your debit card. By signing the contract, you grant the rental car business permission to take money out of your bank account in the amount of the security deposit to pay for late fees or damage repair.

Your debit card will be charged for the rental when the automobile is delivered undamaged and on time, and the security deposit hold will be released. But be aware that it could take 10–14 days for those cash to appear in your bank account, depending on your bank.

If you pay cash for a rental car

Even if you are permitted to pay for the rental with cash when you return the vehicle, Avis will still want a credit or debit card upfront and will put a hold for a security deposit on that card. Renting a car with cash is possible but more challenging.

Contact Avis at (800) 352-7900 if you haven’t received your security deposit back within 10–14 days.

Tips for Monitoring Your Rental Car Transaction

When hiring a car, heed the following advice to prevent cash flow problems:

  • Find out in advance how much the hold—which consists of the cost of the rental car plus the security deposit—will be before securing the reservation.
  • Check your credit card’s available credit before picking up the rental car. It is recommended to call the number shown on the back of your card to make a rapid payment to increase your available credit if you are approaching your credit limit so you can pay the whole amount.
  • To be safe, give yourself a cushion. Consider using a new credit card if you are unable to make a payment because you are very close to your credit limit.
  • Check your receipt after returning the car. Keep an eye on your account to ensure that you receive your deposit refunded promptly and in full.

Final Word

The deposit requirement is a standard practice in the car rental industry, including Avis. Understanding how the Avis credit card hold, Avis deposit amount, and Avis security deposit work can help you budget effectively for your car rental and avoid any unexpected financial surprises.

Avis Car Rental’s deposit serves as a financial security measure, ensuring that there are available funds to cover the cost of the rental and any additional charges that may occur, such as potential damages during the rental period. Avis offers various insurance and protection products to its customers, including Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) and Supplemental Liability Protection (SLP). The CDW is not insurance per se but waives the renter’s responsibility for all or part of the cost of damage to, loss or theft of, the vehicle, provided no actions that invalidate the waiver are taken. This means that if the CDW is purchased and the vehicle is damaged, the renter might not be held financially responsible, and therefore the deposit may not be used to cover these damages. However, should something happen to your rental car, you are financially responsible for this excess. If you purchase CarInsuRent car hire excess insurance, the excess amount can be eliminated and reduced to zero for as low as $6.49 per day* to $94.90 for an annual policy.

  1. Robert Jones says:

What a positive impact it would have if car renters could receive their deposit back at point of returning the car , given the fact that the car is in the condition it was when it was picked up.
This facility would certainly create customer satisfaction and customer retention and loyalty with customers knowing that normally it could possibly take weeks to have their deposit returned which will cause financial hardship. When customers are told that it can take UP TO 30 WORKING DAYS, that in actual fact is 6 weeks which is an unacceptable time frame to wait for a deposit refund.
