Rental Car Interior Damage
You should return your car with all the seats in the same state as you received it. Check the car interior for stains, burns, odors.
Rental Car Tire Damage
You will be held responsible for flat or damaged tires as well as dents or whole on wheel trims. In case you get a spare tire with a rental car, it should be in full working condition upon return. Most rental agreements restrict driving off-road, and the renter would be responsible in the event that there is damage due to off-road use. If you replace the tire yourself, make sure it is exactly the same model and manufacturer of tire that is currently on the car.

Rental Car Tire Damage
What is Normal Wear and Tear in a Rental Car?
When you rent a car, you should keep it in good condition to avoid extra charges upon return. Some vehicle damage is classified as fair wear and tear resulting from regular use and is treated differently from damage caused by the renter, for which they are held accountable. The distinction between acceptable wear and tear and unacceptable damage is detailed in CarInsuRent’s Car Rental Normal Wear and Tear guidelines outlined below. The rental car company should provide a document specifying fair tear and wear rules that match generally accepted standards.
Intentional damage or damage resulting from gross negligence is not classified as normal wear and tear and is excluded from the renter’s damage cover. For a comprehensive understanding of the applicable exclusions, please refer to the Terms and Conditions of your rental agreement. CarInsuRent offer a variety of coverage options for those looking to reduce their excess in the event of a rental car accident or vehicle damage.
How Do Rental Companies Assess When Damage Has Occurred?
Before a vehicle is rented, all damage, including normal wear and tear, is documented. The rental company typically uses time-stamped photographs to record this damage during the vehicle’s preparation for rental. If you notice any unrecorded damage, it is important to inform a staff member before leaving the rental branch.

Damage Pricing Matrix
To calculate the cost of minor damages like chips, dents, and scratches, car rental firms have developed damage pricing matrices, the usage of which is authorized by the BVRLA. A rental car damage pricing matrix is a standardized table used by car rental companies to estimate repair costs for damages incurred while a vehicle is rented. This matrix assigns fixed prices to various types of common damage, such as dents, scratches, or windshield chips, to create consistency and transparency for renters. It considers factors like the location and extent of the damage, aiming to streamline the claims process and minimize disputes. Renters can review this matrix to understand potential charges for damage, helping avoid unexpected costs at return time.
While rental car companies will claim that the objective of a car rental company when it comes to damage is to cover the costs of repair, refurbishment, or replacement of each vehicle, it is quite clear that the costs that are listed on the damage pricing matrix is probably (much) higher then that cost of fixing the damage.

Amazing service - I can't even believe it! I took out a year's insurance, on the first trip everything went without accidents, but on the second trip someone in the parking lot made a deep scratch on the door, for which the rental company charged me 200 euros. I sent all the documents to carinsurent and very quickly after a letter with some questions I received a letter that my claim was approved and the money was transferred to PayPal

How Often Do Rental Cars Get Damaged?
The percentage of car rentals returned with significant damage varies by company and location, but on average, it is estimated that around 10-15% of rental cars may be returned with some level of damage that leads to repair charges.
According to Mr. Michael Rocker, who worked for Avis / Budget in the DC Metro area, they dealt with hundreds of cars a day. They had cars come back with dents and dings on regular basis. Most were minor and barely noticeable. Most was repairable. There are some aspects where the renter gets billed for things like a dirty interior that goes beyond what is acceptable. Fumigating after they smoked in a designated non smoking car. People who rent a 4WD vehicle and take it off road and damages the underside is a violation the contract. Using the car in any sort of racing competition also violates the contract. These are jus a few things the renter can get billed for.
Always Photograph Your Rental Car
As clients, you have the ability to thoroughly inspect the car before renting it to make sure its condition matches the vehicle condition report that was filled out in front of you. But sometimes renters are in such a hurry to reach their target that they fail to give this important stage the attention and attention it needs. Make sure to inspect the vehicle upon its receipt. Ask the rental car company to give you a checklist for inside and outside inspection of a rental car.

Use your mobile phone to take photos of existing damage of the rental car
Checklist Rental Car Outside
- Do a quick walk around the car.
- Look for dents and scratches.
- Check the headlights for chips/cracks.

- Check the wheels for missing front or back plates and the rims for existing damage or hidden scratches.
- If you have a smart phone, use it to take photos as you go around the car.
If there are any issues, make sure your rental company makes a note of any marks you have found.
Checklist Rental Car Inside
- Get into the car and look for excessive trash and burn holes or dirt.
- Take time to record all damage found, even minor issues.
- Make sure that the rear-view mirror is in place.
- Check the knob and handles.
- Do not forget to check the gas and mileage.

ahhh I damaged my rental car and got a dent on it when I hit a pole in a parking lot. Was FREAKING OUT. I took it to Acci-dent in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and they fixed it within a day thank god!! Rental car repair can be so expensive. I’m glad paintless dent removal is fast!
BEWARE. Ensure you fully check your hire car. I was told there was no damage and took it on face value. When I returned the car, they tried to sting me £1,400 excess charge for 2 x 5 cm scuffs on alloy which were clearly there on inititial hire as I know for a fact I hadn’t curbed the wheels. I threatened them with legal action at which point they then waived the charge.
That should read 2 x 5mm scuffs.

We had a tyre blow out on the Interstate yesterday. Managed to get the spare tyre on the vehicle and found the nearest tyre repair shop. £220 later the car is road worthy again! It’s absolute joke that the rental company will say it’s my fault and make me stump up the cost! What if the car had rolled and was written off? Am I supposed to buy a new bleeping car? Absolute joke! Rental companies do nothing more than try and upsell s&@t and clearly never check whether a car is roadworthy!
Thank you for taking the time to read this post.
We totally agree with what you wrote and this is exactly why renters should purchase CarInsuRent car hire excess waiver insurance, as it covers damage to tires and provide piece of mind.
